About Me
My name is James and I have been working as a piano teacher for several years
both privately, and at a variety of different schools, in the Bristol, Somerset and Devon
area. Although piano is the primary instrument I teach, I also teach guitar and bass
guitar, have led ensembles and workshops, and run A level composition classes.
Music has always been a driving force for my personal life and career since studying
instruments at an early age. I continued my studies in the subject up to university
level, receiving a 2:1 at Falmouth university in 2019, and have continued to broaden
my skillset in diploma level piano repertoire and guitar music. My experience is
varied, and I have worked as an accompanist, freelance pianist, and have significant
experience performing my own music, and performing advanced repertoire at recitals,
and collaborating with other musicians.
So far I have a 100% pass rate for students entering exams, with students
usually receiving merits or distinctions, in all instruments, as I maintain a disciplined
approach to exams as I truly want my students to receive the best mark they can when
entering for exams and am familiar with teaching Trinity, Rockschool and ABRSM
exam syllabuses.
I believe what sets me aside from the stereotypical piano teacher, is my eclectic musical
background. Whilst I am trained as a Classical piano teacher, and that is the style I am
most familiar teaching, I also have a passion for contemporary rock and pop music,
and I often draw elements from both styles when teaching students, for example,
encouraging Classically trained students to improvise, and students who study
contemporary pop music, to think about the benefits of using traditional notation. I
encourage myself to analyse students influences and believe that the material studied
should challenge students, but also reflect their own influences and passions for certain
types of music. I am always curious about new music styles and composers, expanding
my students listening, and on occasion draw from non-stereotypical sources to engage
students in lessons.
