About Me
I am a Canadian from Vancouver, but I have been living and teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in Taiwan since 1999.
I have a wide variety of interests - a few are mentioned in the section on education below. These come in handy, particularly for conversation classes.
I love teaching! A teacher's job, as I see it, is to teach students to teach themselves. This takes time. In learning ESL, there is an enormous variety of skills a student needs to acquire. It is not just a matter of presenting, reviewing and testing various aspects of English (vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, etc.). Of course, these are important. Nevertheless, most students have a goal; they need to be given a variety of tactics to approach that goal so that they can choose which tactic works best for them.
Recently, I have been teaching conversation classes to adults.
As I am getting older, I find that I am more suited to working with more mature students (18 - 80).
Are you preparing for university? Already in university? Need a proof reader/editor for your thesis? Or just need someone to bounce ideas off in English so you can study and practice your English too? Any subject. Preparing for GEPT, IELTS TOEFL, etc.? I can help.
Education
In 2016, I received an MA in English from National Central University in Taiwan. However, I wrote my thesis on the French writer Francois Rabelais and the influence of medical innovations during the Renaissance on his writing.
I received my BA from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby (Vancouver), Canada in 1998. At that time my degree was classified as General Studies: basically the equivalent of three minors; those turned out to be English, the Humanities, and Philosophy.
Everything I studied in university, I still study today. My special interests are literature, art and history (ancient to modern).
As an ESL teacher, I have also studied linguistics from a wide variety of perspectives.
Experience / Qualifications
Over twenty years of ESL teaching, I have taught students of all ages and levels of ability.
I have worked as a proof reader and editor for graduate students, doctoral candidates, and professors. I have helped a variety of institutions such as police stations, hospitals, immigration and tax offices in Taiwan improve the quality of their English signage and written information.
