About Me

Hello, I'm Nagehan. For the past 5 years, I've been teaching Turkish to students through both online and face-to-face lessons. During this time, I've had the opportunity to meet many students from different countries around the world. Additionally, with my own experience in learning a foreign language, I understand the challenges that can make learning difficult and sometimes discouraging.

As an experienced guide in overcoming these challenges, I not only teach my students the language but also support them to facilitate their learning process. I truly enjoy chatting with my students about Turkish culture, cuisine, films, travel, music, and many other topics, and sharing insights in these areas.

Beyond my passion for teaching and learning languages, I love traveling, playing the guitar, watching movies and series, and meeting new people and cultures. In 2007, I graduated from the Department of Primary Education at 9 Eylül University in Izmir, Turkey. Then, in 2018, I participated in the Turkish Language Teaching Certification Program for Foreigners at Marmara University in Istanbul and obtained my certification.

I am a qualified and experienced mathematics tutor. Graduated from the Free University of Brussels in 2011, I started my career by teaching remedial courses in different schools in Brussels. I then specialized in individual academic support by following educational training at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. I have been giving private mathematics lessons daily for over ten years.

I have been teaching Turkish to foreigners and I have taught hundreds of students from all ages and professions for more than 20 years. I am a professional English teacher but I like teaching Turkish more as it is my mother tongue and it is a great pleasure for me to share its secrets and beauty.

I am from Istanbul but I traveled almost all cities, mountains, rivers, lakes in Turkey. I am a person who likes less traveled roads and back streets. And after my 40 years old, I learned classical Arabic and Persian and started to study Islamic spirituality at the doctorate level. I taught English at Prep. school at Istanbul Technical University and Yeditepe University and am retired. Ever since I could remember I have been a teacher. Now I only teach Turkish privately and translate classical novels from English to Turkish. I translated 12 books from English to Turkish.

I teach Turkish that is tailored for each student. Each student is unique for me and I know that every student has her/his own way of learning.
If you are a beginner I give a short lecture about the history of Turkish and its characteristics and help you find your way in this very logical, consistent and elegant language. You understand that Turkish is different but that does not necessarily mean difficulty.
From the first lesson, you start speaking Turkish and find yourself in a dialogue.

I use several books using a grammar-based approach integrated with communicative methods to boost the development of all language skills. But we always focus on TALK, TALK, TALK. As a language learner for many years, I know one can learn, improve and take pleasure in a foreign language only by talking and communicating. It is essential to get direct pleasure from what you have learned. My aim is to motivate and inspire you to speak Turkish ignoring minor mistakes and without thinking grammar.

For some students, homework help in the evening (over a fairly short period of time, often an hour from time to time is enough to create a method that allows the student to improve their work by themselves) may be a necessity.
What can also be useful is the deepening of the lessons through small exercises and clarification on the gray points of the courses.

Learning with dyslexia, ADHD, or any other learning difficulty can be frustrating. Especially when you are expected to study in the same way as everyone else, despite your brain just working differently. I know this from personal experience.

I am a law student with dyslexia and ADHD, and over the years I have developed practical strategies that have helped me study, stay organised, and succeed academically. I now want to share those tools with children, teenagers and adults who may be facing similar challenges.

For younger students, I can provide homework and study support, helping them understand how they learn best and how to use practical tools such as mind maps, flashcards, digital resources, structured study sessions and focus techniques. If they already have a diagnosis, I can also help them understand the accommodations and learning tools available to them at school and encourage them to become more confident in communicating their needs.

Just as importantly, I understand the frustration that can come from teachers, classmates or others misunderstanding dyslexia, ADHD as well as other learning difficulties.
