1 to 1 History or English Literature tutoring for secondary-school students
From 68.93 C$ /h
1-1 tutoring sessions aimed to help students improve their grades and essay writing skills. Ideal for students needing a bit of extra help in preparing for their GCSE or A-Level exams. I adopt a friendly and encouraging method of tutoring which focuses on what the student needs from me in order to make progress. I can, for instance, look at students' past assignments, tests and exams in order to give feedback, identify weak points and make improvements together in the session. We can also read and analyse texts together, if this is something that might help improve their ability to pick out themes, make comparisons and critically think about the literature. For History classes, we can, for example, focus on planning longer essay questions and / or doing source analysis - picking apart a source and assessing its purpose, content and value. English Literature texts that I know particularly well include Macbeth, Othello, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Great Gatsby, Atonement, An Inspector Calls, Hard Times, and Keats's Poetry. History subjects I have a particularly strong knowledge in include Revolutionary Russia 1850-1950 and the 17th Century English Civil Wars. However, I also have a broad knowledge of many different historical topics and periods, including the British Empire, colonisation and decolonisation in Africa, Enlightenment Europe and 20th Century America. I will always try my best to integrate the methods of teaching and marking that the student's school prefers.

About Me
I am a student currently on my year abroad in Lund, Sweden and I’m keen to tutor students as a part-time job while I’m studying. I am in the third year of my BA History degree at the University of York and have achieved A*s in English Literature, History and Psychology A-Levels. I am a friendly, enthusiastic and hard-working student who has always gone above and beyond when it comes to academic achievement, reflected in my results at both GCSE and A-Level, and my ongoing success at university. I would love the opportunity to tutor a student who needs a little extra help to achieve their academic goals or who simply wants to improve their essay writing or analytical skills.
I feel comfortable tutoring History and English from GCSE up to A-Level as my qualifications have provided me with an excellent base of knowledge, while my time at university in particular has allowed my critical thinking, research and essay writing skills to flourish. My approach would of course be tailored to the needs of the student and I am open to learning about and implementing more specific methods of teaching and examination that their school might prefer.

Experience / Qualifications
Having been tutored myself at school, I understand the value of a supportive academic figure who can listen to your concerns and work through them with you in real-time. I have mentored a first-year History student at university, helping to review and comment on her essay work, help with questions about academic reading and note-taking, and generally providing support during her first year at university. I have also worked in activity planning and tour guiding for international students aged 12-18 as part of a study holiday company in London. I therefore feel that I have gained experience in different ways to engage young people with education, which can be both challenging and rewarding.
