My learner-oriented approach focuses on accidence, syntax, vocabulary, reading, pronunciation and textual and literary analysis of Attic Greek, koine and biblical Greek writings. We will be using tested, learner-friendly methods and textbooks by distinguished scholars or institutions.

Extra information

Textbooks or other material will be decided by common agreement and as a function of the focus of each class. We can employ the Erasmian pronunciation or the current phonation, depending on the students' preference.

About Me

Trilingual in English, French and Greek, I am also fluent in German and have some basic knowledge of Russian and Spanish. I am a beginner in Mandarin Chinese. I worked many years in UNESCO and later as an English translator for the United Nations system at large.

Education

I've got literary degrees from Harvard (where I received a BA and a distinction for translation into Attic Greek) and from the Sorbonne Nouvelle (with an MA in translation). I also have a Master of Arts degree in economics and a French doctorate in philosophy.

Experience / Qualifications

I have taught Ancient Greek since college, where I coached classmates majoring in Classics. What currently makes that activity so rewarding is the unceasing give-and-take between Greek, in its long existence, and many other languages and cultures. I enjoy sharing Greek as a particularly enlightening and elegant means of discussing matters that are still shaping the multilateral world we live in.

Let's start by declensions and so on. We'll discover the verbal tenses and how is a phrase done. You don't know the slight aspects unless have studied how Ancient Greek's verbs work, or the Ancient Indian.
So, if we can translate texts (at first easier ones, the the original), we could reach anywhere in the vast world around the Roman Empire. Latin is the basis for the Romance languages. And Greek is more usual between us than you could imagine (Medicine, over all).

You could structure your mind as the ancient did! They are the "little box" where you can put in whatever you want. It also provides a manner to live and to work in order to know the essential tasks and the rest.

My name is Serdane and I offer ancient language courses to secondary school students who may have difficulty developing a working method that suits them. Extroverted and bubbly...and above all, a lot of humor!

Everyone learns in their own way. This is why I do not adopt a rigid method, but rather I adapt to the specificities of each student. I am a native speaker of Greek. I graduated from a Greek high school and, later, the University of Athens where I attended courses in pedagogics, psychology, and linguistics.

During our lessons, I'll help you develop your skills (oral/written, and not only). I'll also try to help you improve your pronunciation and spelling. I assign homework and after I receive it, correct it thoroughly additionally providing a lot of remarks/examples if they are necessary.

I worked at a language center between 2009-2016 where I was a director of studies and taught mainly English as a foreign/second language. Since 2005, when I first started teaching Greek, I have taught children and adults on a variety of language proficiency levels, mainly individually.

I constantly seek progress, meaning that I study further through reading books/articles concerning didactics/methodology and learning difficulties (chiefly dyslexia), observing other teachers as well as attending seminars (online or face-to-face).

- Google Docs to keep notes, which you can check at any time and they are yours to keep,
- sketch board me to make mind maps to show connections between ideas, etc.

I adore my profession and desire each and every one of my students be satisfied with the lesson. That's why I make sure the atmosphere is stress-free and nice. I also want my lessons to be as effective and close to real-life needs as possible. Therefore, I make sure they are well-prepared, although they can be altered at any point, should such an opportunity arise. I like explaining things in a variety of ways as well as make use of dictionaries, diagrams, etc. When it comes to students who want to obtain certificates, I am very demanding.

An introduction to the basic syntactic and grammatical phenomena of the ancient Greek language. A LIVING METHOD
Whether you are a beginner or more advanced, I will help you progress in Latin or ancient Greek, which you will learn as a living language: it will not be primarily a question of translating Latin or Greek, but above all of speaking it, reading it, writing it!

FORGET YOUR DICTIONARY
By doing so, you will memorize vocabulary and grammatical structures much more easily than with the classic method based essentially on translation. You will no longer spend your life in the dictionary, and eventually, you will read your favorite authors like an open book!

LATIN
I essentially offer a living Latin course based on the Orberg method, acclaimed by thousands of Latinists around the world. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced, I can accompany you on the chapters corresponding to your level of Familia Romana (first volume) or Roma Aeterna (second volume). It is therefore important that you get this book.

If you want to work on Familia Romana, I also highly recommend that you purchase the Vivarium Novum workbook to consolidate your learning: volume I for chapters I to XIX, volume II for chapters XX to XXXIV.

GREEK
For Greek, we will use the Logos method. It will be up to the student to obtain a copy of this manual.

A LA CARTE COURSES
However, I am attentive to pupils and students who are waiting for more conventional methods, particularly in the context of preparing for the baccalaureate, the competitive examinations for the grandes écoles, or even the agrégation. Version, theme, explanation of an old text: all these exercises are well known to me for having practiced them for many years.

It is also possible to build a course based on your desires (excluding erotic texts and magic manuals). Do you want to follow one method rather than another? Discover a particular author? Tell me! Be careful, however, to remain realistic! We do not tackle Xenophon or Titus Livius without a solid level.
