Learn Norwegian with a native speaker in practical, personal online lessons. Whether you are moving to Norway for work, want to speak with Norwegian family and friends, or need to pass Norskprøven, we make a clear plan together from the first lesson.

My method: we speak Norwegian from day one, at a level that fits you. I explain grammar simply and in English when needed, and we focus on the words and sentences you will actually use in daily life, at work and in the test.

A typical lesson:
- A few minutes of conversation to warm up
- New vocabulary or grammar, explained with clear examples
- Speaking practice with real situations, like calling the doctor, a job interview or talking about yourself
- Corrections of pronunciation and common mistakes
- Short homework so you keep improving between lessons

I have written my own Norwegian learning materials for levels A1, A2 and B1, with exercises and answer keys, so you get structured material and not only conversation.

The lessons are for children, teenagers and adults, from complete beginners to advanced learners, and for students preparing for Norskprøven.

About Me

I'm Mathias, a native Norwegian speaker from Nordland in northern Norway. I teach Norwegian online to learners from around the world, and I love seeing students go from their first shy sentences to real conversations.

As a teacher I am patient, relaxed and well prepared. I want my students to feel safe making mistakes, because that is how we learn to speak. I especially enjoy teaching motivated adults who are moving to Norway for work or family, and students preparing for Norskprøven.

I have written my own Norwegian learning books for levels A1, A2 and B1, so my lessons are structured, with clear explanations and exercises. I speak fluent English and understand Swedish and Danish well, so I can explain grammar clearly and compare with other Scandinavian languages.

I'm currently living abroad myself, so I know how it feels to learn to manage in a new country and a new language. I look forward to meeting you!

Education

Molde University College, Norway: two years of studies in maritime logistics and economics (degree not completed). Upper secondary school in Norway, general studies, with Norwegian language and literature as a core subject throughout.

Cosy private lessons for everybody
I try to make my online lessons as cosy as possible. I use the video-conference system, so I can see my students and they can see me; we can talk, we make the exercises together, I explain all the grammar, and if my students have any doubt or questions, I explain it orally which I think makes it easier to be understood.

It is as if we were sitting in an office side by side. The only thing we cannot do is drinking a coffee while we study.

Besides the lessons, I always send some homework. I will send a book that we follow, and the rest of the material is sent by me by e-mail as well.

As soon as it is possible, I advise my students to start reading books in the language they learn, and from the very beginning to start listening to the TV. It is a way of being surrounded by the language.

I always insist a lot on the accent, and this helps. I have students with a perfect accent. Listening to the language also helps to open the hears to the sounds, making easier to understand. From the very beginning I also start with small conversations in each lesson.

You may believe that all my students are being very successful with this kind of lessons. I have now students from all over the world. Concerning the level my students attain, ofcourse it depends on them.

Together we see what your needs are and how fast you want to learn.

As for the number of lessons per week, I advise that you should have at least two. Less than two is very little and you have a long break between lessons. It is bad because you don't have any contact with the language and feel that you are advancing very slowly.

We can also have lessons in the weekend if that is easier for you.

Would you like to learn Norwegian from a Norwegian native speaker? This is your chance. I have more than 10 years of experience teaching Norwegian, starting from scratch, until a level at which you can make an attempt at the Bergenstest which is required for certain professions if you want to work in Norway.
