This class is designed for beginner and intermediate levels Italian language learners looking to improve their grammar and/or conversational skills. I offer a step by step course through the Italian language involving an in-depth study of grammar, the simple opportunity to practice conversing in Italian, or a mix of both.

The class will not involve any purchase of resources besides the session cost; I will assign homework if needed that will be either from my own personalized lesson plan or free online. I am a native English speaker, so a proficiency in English helps, but if a student's Italian is advanced enough the class can be taught in Italian. I have an intermediate knowledge of Spanish as well.

About Me

Ciao, mi chiamo Dario! I'm a 21 year old recent graduate from Northern California. I grew up hearing and speaking Italian in my household as my dad is from Calabria in Southern Italy. I'm passionate about pedagogy, and am working towards becoming a professor in political theory. My dynamic approach to teaching is tailored towards the needs of each student; I do not operate on a strict lesson plan unless I feel it will be beneficial for a given student. I view language as a living, breathing entity that is an ever-changing reflection of a people's lived experiences, so each lesson necessarily involves lessons in Italian cultural practices and history. Learning a new language is an opportunity to shake unconscious assumptions ingrained in one's native language and engage intimately with different ways of life. Thus I take teaching the Italian language seriously out of respect for the experiences and history bound up in each word. I hope to nurture the transformative experience that learning Italian was for me.

Education

Bachelors in Arts (BA) in Political Science with minors in Italian Studies, English, and Philosophy from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo. Attending the New School for Social Research in NYC for an MA in Politics starting August 2026.

5 months as an Italian tutor through California State University International Program (CSUIP) in Florence, Italy. Experience speaking with family, classes taken on Italian history/culture, and formal Italian classes taken for 4 semesters.

As an Italian Opera singer, I help since many years singers with the right pronunciation of the repertoire they sing, helping them in shaping the language in a clear way, which also helps the singing.

Our lesson will involve speaking, pronunciation exercises and singing.
We will start the lesson by reading the text and finding the right direction and emphasis.
We will focus on the sounds and how to produce them.
In the second part of the lesson, we will apply all of the above to the singing!

If you wish to brush up your Italian, resume a past series of lessons, or simply start from scratch learning Italian, this is the right lesson for you! I like to personalize each class/course according to the needs and goals of my students. My classes are focused on improving the student's communication skills. At beginner and lower intermediate levels, I prefer using a text book/ student book in the first part of the class. I usually use "Nuovissimo Progetto Italiano" and "Arrivederci" by Edilingua, or "Nuovo Espresso" and "Dieci" by Alma Publishing. For the second part of the lesson, I create engaging contents using original videos, press articles, extracts from blogs and social media, literary texts. If the students do not feel comfortable using Italian from scratch, I can switch to English, German, or Dutch. The course fee includes the correction of home assignments.
