My name is Bruno. I am a native Italian speaker currently living in Sweden. I love to travel and discover new things around me. I was born and raised in Sicily. I am proud of my origins and the culture that has shaped me. I have lived and studied in Milan, where I obtained the master's degree in Environmental Engineering. I have been working as an environmental educator since 2017. I have also participated in two international exchange programs: I spent one term in Lisbon, Portugal and one term in Bogotà, Colombia. While in Colombia, I used to teach Italian to my fellow students and I enjoyed it a lot, as a teacher and as a person.

We will work on different tasks that will gradually increase your Italian knowledge. By different examples, taken from literature, music, and everyday life, we will also explore the Italian culture. We will learn how to write - "scrivere", talk - "parlare", understand - "capire", and listen - "ascoltare".

I am sure that in no time you'll be able to speak "Italiano"!

About Me

I am convinced that the most powerful tool in education is the question “Why?”.
I have used this tool throughout my whole education process and I continue to do so. Now, I would like to take a step forward and invite students to ask their own “whys”. I want them not to be afraid of asking their own questions. Moreover, I would like them to answer these questions and try to find the solution together.

I have always been an inquisitive person, asking questions about various phenomena. This is how my passion for nature has started. The mountain peaks were always something to reach for, the sea was a mysterious place with secrets to discover, but so was the backyard.

Ciao! I have been teaching Italian for the past sixteen years, privately and at language schools including La Scuola Italiana del Greenwich Village in New York and ItalCultura, the school of the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago.

During our first two lessons, I’ll make sure you have the tools to pronounce and recognize all the sounds of Italian. This step is essential, and it makes everything that comes afterwards much easier.

When I teach, I try to avoid all the things I hated as a language student. My terrifying French teacher in middle school made us repeat the same fake dialogue from a really bad textbook ad nauseam, over and over and over again. Some of it is still carved into my brain: “Bonjour, je m’appelle Richard Drapeau, je viens du Canada, je suis Canadien...”

So we won’t do that.

We’ll use real songs and real literature. We’ll have real conversations, tell stories, improvise, and, when possible, go on “talking walks.” I find that when you engage more of your senses, it becomes easier to relax, stay curious, and actually remember new words.

I customize my materials around your interests, needs, and desired pace. If you love cinema, we can work with films. If you’re interested in literature, politics, food, art, history, or simply being able to have a proper conversation when you’re in Italy, that can become part of the class.

And because you’re learning with a native Italian, you’ll also learn about Italian culture, history, habits, gestures, contradictions, and ways of thinking. Language is never just a pile of grammar rules.

I speak several languages myself, so I know both how exciting and how painfully tedious learning one can be. My aim is to give you a strong foundation without draining all the life out of it.

I hold a degree in Lingue e Letterature Straniere (Foreign Languages and Literatures) from Università Roma Tre and a Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media from Columbia College Chicago. If you wish to brush up your Italian, resume a past series of lessons, or simply start from scratch learning Italian, this is the right lesson for you! I like to personalize each class/course according to the needs and goals of my students. My classes are focused on improving the student's communication skills. At beginner and lower intermediate levels, I prefer using a text book/ student book in the first part of the class. I usually use "Nuovissimo Progetto Italiano" and "Arrivederci" by Edilingua, or "Nuovo Espresso" and "Dieci" by Alma Publishing. For the second part of the lesson, I create engaging contents using original videos, press articles, extracts from blogs and social media, literary texts.
