Hi! I’m a young native Finn and I offer a relaxed way to practice speaking Finnish.

If you feel like textbooks and grammar are too boring, we can just focus on talking. I’ll teach you how Finns actually speak and help you with your pronunciation. We can talk about whatever interests you.

In person in Helsinki (We can go for a walk or a coffee and just chat in Finnish).

Hi, my name is Pinja and I was born and raised in Finland. At the university, I studied Social Science. I have worked in the field with children and families since 2009. When working with refugees and immigrants, I got interested in teaching languages. In 2015 I started teaching Finnish in a refugee center. Later I got my certificate in teaching. I have experience teaching Finnish and English in a traditional classroom setting and giving private lessons online and offline.

I have a degree in Social Science and a I’m a certified teacher. I have taught English and Finnish since 2015. I started by teaching beginner Finnish to immigrants in Helsinki. Later I got my certificate in teaching and since then I have taught Finnish and English online and offline. I have worked as an English teacher in the Philippines, in Nicaragua and in Mexico teaching children and adults. I enjoy giving private lessons, because I personalize the lessons for the student’s goals and interests.

I would like to support you to meet your individual learning goals; whether you aim to learn grammar or vocabulary for a certain topic or gain more confidence in conversation etc. The aim of the first lesson is to evaluate your level and to set up learning goals. We will talk about the different ways of learning (visual, auditory, reading/writing and kinesthetic) and make a plan according to your learning style and preferences. I believe that using different engaging activities keep students interested, motivated and support their learning. During the lesson we can use a variety of different materials, books, work sheets, articles, listening exercises, conversation exercises, games, music and videos. I have also made a lot of authentic material, such as grammar points, exercises and texts, to support your learning.

I do not have a formal graduate degree in teaching, but I place a high value on all forms of learning a language (listening, speaking, reading & writing) and I believe my prior experience as a tutor compensates for this lack. I have years of past teaching experience as a music teacher and a substitute teacher. I have taught individually, in big classes, and in kindergarten as well.

In general, my method is quite dynamic, flexible, and goal-oriented. I am very flexible and listen to my students on their goals. I am prepared to research how to develop as a teacher and how to meet my students' goals best. I provide material to help my students improve independently between lessons (optional homework).

In English, I use a specific coursebook series which is also designed for self-study, but I do implement some additional materials for learning such as Preply content, lesson PDFs, and audio files from external sources according to students' individual needs.

In the Finnish language, I use multiple different textbooks and audio which provide learning and practice for the written word as well as the spoken language. I implement materials found online as well. There are varying ways to meet the goals of students, and thus the specifics of these methods should be applied individually.

Starting the first class we will speak only Finnish, so you won't notice any difficulty of the language and you learn as if it were your other mother tongue. If you are a music lover I can send you a playlist of the best Finnish songs of all time.

I will tailor the Finnish classes according to each student's needs. So, in that sense, there are many options! Among some things that my lessons usually entail:

-Reading texts with key words vocabularies
-Listening exercises with key words vocabularies
-Grammar exercises
-Discussion exercises of mixed topics as well as of the texts and listening exercises
-Checking homework (if there have been any)

I will create a Google Docs document for each student and all the lesson notes and materials can be found from there, so you can access your file anytime you want to review the things that we have studied during the lessons. This also helps with keeping the things organised.

The bottom line is that the lessons will be tailored so that they can fit to each student's needs, and therefore correspond with the desired level and goals. The language of instruction can be English, Estonian or Spanish. But, of course, if you're looking for a mainly conversational approach or are a more advanced student, then we could even solely speak in Finnish as well!
