About Me

I'm an experienced teacher of English, with over five years teaching experience across the world. I have also trained new teachers of English. I have a PGCE, specialising in teaching English as an Additional Language. I believe in an immersive approach to language learning, which is great, because it lets me share with my students some of the things that I love!

Improve your Creative Writing with an experienced tutor!

This class will focus on practical ways to improve your creative writing, whether you write prose, poetry, or drama. We will workshop your writing, focusing on, amongst other topics, characterisation, plot, form, dialogue, word choice, and clutter. I'll make some of my own recommendations based on my experience tutoring creative writing, and suggest some things for you to read and explore so that you can help yourself. Each lesson, we'll either look at something completely new that you've written, or, if requested, we can look at something specific over a number of lessons.

I have a MSc. in Education, and I am currently a PhD candidate at Leiden University within the Humanities Faculty, as part of the Institute for History - International Studies.
My academic activities include developing special courses in order to prepare students for TOEFL, SAT, ACT, GRE, and GMAT examinations (American standardized tests required to apply to certain universities).
I am also an International Baccalaureate® (IB) and Advanced Placement proctor and tutor for the American School of The Hague.

I have many years of experience teaching English, Spanish, History, Social Studies, Psychology, MS maths and Algebra.

In addition, I have several years of experience with Mindfulness practices within educational settings in order to address procrastination, stress, anxiety, and enhanced cognitive and academic performance.

I am an Italian native speaker with a bachelor in Italian Literature and Linguistics. In Italy, I usually teach English to high school students, or adults who want to improve their skills with this language.
Usually, I tend to use a non-academic approach, by focusing on the student's interests and make him/her applying the language to their everyday life, instead of simply learning the grammar rules by heart.

As I am finishing my Bachelor in Comparative Philosophy at Leiden University, I am more than happy to help high school students and adults who show interest in engaging in critical thinking, whether it is for exams, tests or as personal challenge. Furthermore, I am proficient in English, French and German for students and adults interested in learning a new language or preparing for language tests.

Although I am a trained philosophy teacher for secondary students, I have shifted my focus to tutoring English and Portuguese language learners. My goal is to provide dynamic classes that allow students to use functional language in real-world ways, but each class can be tailor-made to the individual's needs. I use Cambridge materials for my English classes, in addition to real-world texts and videos, to train students on grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Student-centered classes are the most beneficial in my opinion, so I focus on having the student speak while also guiding them with the correct language depending on their problem areas.

English is a world language. You can go almost everywhere with English. That is why it is important that you have some command of English and that you can make yourself understood. And that is what I am for, helping people, young or old, to learn English or improve their English.

Method:

First I make an assessment of aptitude for, and existing knowledge of, English for each student.

During teaching I find the following elements important:
1. Creating a friendly and pleasant atmosphere in which the student starts to feel enthusiastic.
2. Discipline. This means that the course leader and the student (s) do what is expected of them.
3. From simple to complicated, tailored to the aptitude and experience of the student (s).
4. Practicing a lot and repeating previous lessons.
5. Structured work. This mainly means working on the grammar of English because grammar gives structure to a language.
6. Regular keys.
