About Me

I am a university student from Vancouver, Canada. I have always had a passion for teaching. This year, I am teaching English in primary schools in Montpellier and will return to Canada to continue my studies to become a teacher. I am learning French, so I understand the frustrations and confusions that come with learning a second language, but together we can make learning English fun!

Hello everyone,
My name is Phillip. I am an experienced, native bilingual (USA/Switzerland) English teacher. Today, I am pleased to guide you in your learning from my office located in the wild and inspiring setting of western Ireland.

With many years of experience as a private tutor, I work with students from all backgrounds. However, over time, I have developed an approach that is particularly appreciated by seniors and retirees. Why? Because I am convinced that learning a language at this stage of life should first and foremost be a shared pleasure, a window onto the world, and a wonderful way to keep the mind sharp and curious.
My approach: Trust and kindness above all

Many of us have somewhat rigid memories of school learning. With me, forget the stress of mistakes or tedious grammar. My primary goal is to restore your confidence. We progress at your pace, with a gentle, patient, and personalized teaching approach. Whether you're starting from scratch or simply want to refresh your old school memories, I adapt completely to your needs.

What we can explore together:
- Travel English: So that your next trip abroad is synonymous with serenity (getting around, ordering in restaurants, communicating with locals without apprehension).

-Maintaining family ties: Ideal if you have bilingual grandchildren or grandchildren living abroad and you want to share more with them.

-Conversation & Culture: Discuss current events, literature, history or life in Ireland, while enjoying my clear and easy-to-understand native accent.

-Brain gymnastics: Using English as a fun and stimulating tool to maintain memory and cognitive plasticity.

Why choose me?
As a dual American and Swiss national living in Ireland, I bring a unique cultural richness to your life. I have a mastery of all the nuances of the English language, but I also have a perfect understanding of French culture and structure.

Practical and technological aspects:

We'll work together via Zoom or Google Meet, very simple and reliable tools. If you're worried about the technology, don't be: I'll guide you step by step during our first session so you feel completely comfortable on screen. It's much simpler than it seems!

Join me for a friendly and engaging experience, blending Swiss rigor, American optimism, and the legendary warmth of Ireland. Let's transform your English practice into a truly enriching human adventure.
Nice to meet you,

Phillip

My teaching approach is very versatile and my lessons are crafted to meet the students' unique needs. I will always assess the specific goals a student has and I will design a tailor-made language plan to meet those needs and objectives.
Once the students (beginner scenario) acquire confidence with the language, I encourage them to orally construct phrases based on all the words they know. A good starting point that students appreciate is to describe an image. It is important for me to provide constant encouragement to students and to recognise individual achievements as well as creating the awareness that they can actually start speaking the language from day one.

Speak with greater confidence in English—whether you are preparing for an interview, delivering a presentation or taking part in an important business conversation.

I offer personalised, one-to-one sessions for intermediate and advanced English speakers, particularly international professionals, university students and applicants. Together, we will work on expressing your ideas clearly, choosing appropriate language and responding thoughtfully to questions.

Each lesson starts with your goals. We might discuss a topical article, rehearse a job or university interview, practise a presentation, or explore a realistic workplace situation. I will give you specific feedback on your wording, structure and delivery, with practical points to work on between sessions. You are welcome to bring your own presentation, interview questions or discussion topics.

I graduated with a First in Law from Oxford and completed the Bachelor of Civil Law before training as a barrister. I am now a non-practising barrister with substantial experience in banking, business leadership and international consultancy. My approach draws on years of explaining complex ideas, presenting arguments and working with people across cultures.

Lessons normally last 60 minutes and are available online to students worldwide, with in-person sessions also possible in and around London. My aim is to help you communicate with clarity and confidence in situations that matter to you.
