About Me

Hello! My name is Sophia and I am an American, native English speaker currently living in Lille, France. I am in France pursuing my masters degree from EDHEC Business School.

I am very passionate about working with children and would love to help them learn and be exposed to English in a positive way but teaching them useful, basic English knowledge such as introductory conversations, ranges of vocabulary and describing words to be able to express themselves.

This course is intended for people, employees as well as students, who want to improve their English through oral practice. Beginner to advanced levels are accepted. Oral practice of a language is an effective way to become familiar with the different levels of vocabulary and accents, which can be a barrier to direct understanding. My course also aims to consolidate the achievements of higher levels which can often lack opportunities to practice. My main objective is speaking, but my course can also be adapted to requests for writing.

No two courses are alike! That said, five key skills consistently recur in a successful session: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing, speaking, and vocabulary. Behind these big words lies not only the key to success, but also a wealth of richness and diversity.

Diversity of subjects, first of all, according to your interests (sport, current events, history, arts, etc.), but also diversity of methods: inverted class, before/after explanations, sensory approaches (synesthesia), mnemonic devices... everything is possible, depending on what suits you best!

Here are two examples from my experience:

A., an 8-year-old, lively and boisterous: To capture his attention, sessions should include varied, short activities directly related to his interests. Repetition can be beneficial, but more often from one session to the next than within the same class, to avoid boredom or frustration.

B., a 67-year-old adult, calm and passionate about reading: here, we can offer longer activities, focused on reading and vocabulary enrichment, which will then serve as a springboard for oral or written expression.

These two portraits clearly show that it is not up to the student to adapt to a method, but rather for the method to adapt to the student. It is with this in mind that I design each of my courses.
