Hi, I’m Subin — born and raised in Korea, now living in Houston.

I taught my husband Korean from absolute zero to full conversations. He’s not Korean, had no background, and now holds his own in Korean. So yes, I know how to actually get someone there.

I also spend a lot of time helping Korean friends navigate English, which means I understand where the two languages clash and why certain things are so hard to wrap your head around as a learner.

My sessions are conversational but I’m not just there to chat. I’ll catch your mistakes in real time, explain why something sounds unnatural, and teach you the cultural context behind what you’re saying. Korean is deeply tied to social dynamics and context that no app will ever explain to you.

We can work through whatever you’re actually into: breaking down K-drama scenes, translating lyrics, watching a clip and talking through what’s really being said versus what the subtitles say. That stuff teaches you more than any textbook chapter!
Extra information
Before our first session, just send me a quick message about why you’re learning Korean and what you’re into (K-dramas, music, travel, etc.). No prep needed beyond that. If you have a specific scene, song, or topic you want to work through, bring it and we’ll go from there.

About Me
I'm Subin, originally from Seoul, Korea and now living in Houston as a PhD researcher. I'm pretty serious about science during the day, but teaching Korean is something I genuinely enjoy.

I like students who are curious and self-motivated. You don't need to come in with a perfect study plan but just
show up with something you want to figure out, whether that's a grammar rule that's been confusing you, a song
you want to actually understand, or a k-drama scene that went way over your head.

I'm direct, I won't let mistakes slide, but I'm also patient. My sessions move at your pace!
Education
PhD Candidate, Cancer Systems Biology and Bioinformatics, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

B.S. Molecular Biology, University of California, Berkeley
Experience / Qualifications
Native Korean speaker from Seoul. Taught my husband Korean from zero to conversational with no prior exposure to the language.

Regularly help Korean friends and colleagues navigate English, which gives me a strong sense of where the two
languages trip learners up most!

Have been actively involved in Korean cultural education since middle school, receiving multiple recognitions for cross-cultural outreach & education and served as an international student ambassador.

Teaching Korean has always been as much about culture for me as it is about language.
