I will share with you all I know after living 30 years in an ecovillage and transforming a local community on a remote pacific island. I believe that ecovillages and small-scale communities through their own radical sustainable experimentation can serve as sustainability demonstration models for rural and urban communities in the coming years of climate change.

About Me
I've been a teacher all my adult life but I've lived an alternative out-of-the box lifestyle. I've traveled a lot and lived 42 years outside of the UK. I originally taught in regular schools but quickly progressed to creating my own circus school and sustainability project where I taught many skills to kids of all ages. I especially enjoyed sharing my passion for sustainability with the several hundred young adult interns who spent weeks or months experiencing life in our ecovillage in Hawaii. I've written two books and many articles about my community development days and look forward to sharing more about how, why and what to do to live more sustainably. I will customize every course I lead to suit the needs and interests of each student who I work with.

In 1987 I founded the Bellyacres artistic ecovillage with a vision to experiment with sustainable community living practices. We started with raw jungle and had no potable water, no grid power, no telephone service, lots of rocks, and very little soil. We had to learn how build, grow and produce power all off grid and all with a very low budget. Our core values were based around the pursuit of an organic and renewable energy lifestyle using permaculture principles. However, there was a whole lot more.

Through hard work and trial and error we developed sustainable systems for food, energy, transport, water, construction and most important for community connection. We were described as one of the most sustainable communities in the USA in 2010. We accommodated as many as 40 residents and in 2007 built the Seaview Performance Arts Center for Education which quickly evolved to become a multi-purpose community center hosting two public schools, two weekly farmers markets, a wide range of performance arts programs and performances plus community meetings and events.

In 2012 the Hawaii Governor said “Bellyacres encourages renewable non-petroleum based energy, sustainable food cultivation and resource reprocessing and serves as the gathering place for a community of 1200 homes and 3000 residents.” U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye commended Bellyacres for “providing a positive, enriching and safe place that helps motivate the entire community with a focus on self sufficiency and self improvement.”
