About Me

Hi. I have been teaching for many years now. I love to see pupils develop over the years that I work with them. Confidence, musicianship and skills are all learnt and stay with that pupil for life. I have had about 10 of my pupils go into the business or to music college. It is the belief that I instill in them which helps here.
I am also massively experienced at teaching beginners. I take the mantra that the three key 3 key ingredients of a good teacher are enthusiasm, technical correctness and an EQ with the pupil and parents. I run a very successful music department employing some 14 instrumental teachers so do know how to achieve amazing results. I have found 'lockdown' an interesting time from the IT point of view and want to now develop my Online teaching profile. Hello!

I am a musician offering tutorials in piano, trumpet, cornet, harmony, counterpoint, theory, and other general music-y things in English! I’m also available to direct rehearsals and concerts.

As a composer I have a diverse range of skills. Whilst most of my work is contemporary classical concert music, I have a good grounding in tonal harmony and am experienced in writing music more typical of past eras and for events such as opening ceremonies and medals ceremonies. I also have knowledge of jazz, having worked in this genre.

Lessons comprise of me examining the student's work, discussing it with them (how they've written it, what decisions they've made, what they wish the music to do and be), as well as discussing any suggestions I have to further enhance the effectiveness of the music and their ideas. Lessons can also involve examining works by other composers, giving the student inspiration and knowledge, as well as learning about different compositional techniques, which can include ways to deal with harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, and development of ideas.

The needs of the pupil come first, and the lessons will be designed to accommodate those first and foremost, in this way I will employ my Jazz training to improvise the best possible lesson based on those needs.

Rafael is a professional jazz & classical saxophonist, composer, and arranger doubling on the clarinet and flute. With a musical career of over 15 years, he has performed both solo and in collaboration with various musical groups. These include his own bands, esteemed musical artists, cover bands, tribute bands and jazz/swing big bands. His performances have taken him to national and international music venues, festivals, and tours ranging on different styles of music. Having graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire (BMus Hons Jazz Studies) and also completing the 8th Grade (ABRSM) on Classical Saxophone Rafael has long been enthusiastic about studying jazz and classical music on the saxophone. During all his formative years and most of his career he has enjoyed every opportunity to share his passion through music by being an inspiring, supportive and encouraging woodwind teacher.

Over the last 8 years of private instruction experience Rafael has been working as a Woodwind Teacher (saxophone, flute, and clarinet) on both classical and jazz music. He believes in creating a friendly and professional atmosphere making sure that students feel supported on their individual musical journey, by giving them the knowledge necessary for reaching their personal aspirations. Rafael has helped many students of all levels and ages to make fast improvement. Over the years he has shown high levels of knowledge having taught music theory (classical & Jazz), Jazz improvisation, composition (classical & Jazz) as well as has successfully preparing students for all the different types of exams such as GCSE, A-Level exams, and ABRSM, LCM, LSM, Trinity College London (TCL), RSM, Rock School. First Lesson

Typically, the first lesson begins with an introduction and informal chat where Rafael and his students get to know each other and discuss the student’s musical interests and aspirations. Rafael offers a wide range of experiences and is interested in focusing on ways to help each student achieve their maximum potential. Whatever your background, age group or level, whether you coming to instruction for the first time, returning after many years, continuing study after conservatory, preparing for exams or even on a professional path Rafael has enough knowledge. He’s able to adapt his instruction according to individual needs and preferences of each student by providing books, exercises and/or repertoire. In-person lessons usually take place at Rafael’s teaching studio or alternatively on student’s chosen location.

Beginners

Rafael understands that starting your journey on learning a new musical instrument can be difficult which is why he’s always a supportive and encouraging teacher towards new students. Beginner students don’t need to have any prior experience whatsoever when it comes to either playing or being able to read music. On the 1st lesson usually there’s no need to own an instrument as Rafael will provide everything necessary and guide each student on the basics of how to play the instrument they’re learning. By the end of the 1st lesson students are usually able to play a few notes on the instrument and have all the basic knowledge needed to start learning and begin their musical journey. To benefit from Rafael’s teaching, it’s recommended that student have their own instrument (Saxophone, Clarinet or Flute) although, Rafael has knowledge on available and affordable instrument hire services as well as provides guidance to all students on purchasing their first instrument
