Start the new course learning to play piano!

I am a professional classical pianist, accompanist, creator, and composer with a Bachelor's Degree from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and a Master's Degree from the Royal Conservatorium in the Hague. For 7 years now, I have been teaching students of all levels between 5 and 60 years old.

Lessons are based on your level, interests, and goals. Together we can find out if you are keener on classical repertoire, or if you want to play your favorite pop music, some beautiful soundtrack from a movie you like or compose/improvise new pieces. With my experience in teaching diverse genres, I will help you explore the music that you like.

The central pillars I always work with are technique and creativity, which are much more connected than you would expect! While we advance, I also introduce the basics (or more deeply, if you are interested) of music theory to learn to communicate with each other in musical terms (chords, keys, score reading, etc.). And above all, the goal is to enjoy and have fun!

About Me
Teaching is fundamental to my professional career. I have given piano lessons for 5 years and I see it as the means to bring my experience with music directly to students. Therefore, my main goal as a teacher is to make this experience enjoyable, enriching and challenging.

My experience includes teaching mainly adults and children, but I have also taught teenagers. Due to this, I have confidence in my abilities to teach beginners, amateurs, and students who need support for music school. For children, I strongly believe that parents have to be present in the learning process in order to keep track of what is being worked during lessons. This means that I also inform them regularly about their child’s progress. I am patient and understanding and always want fluid communication between students and me.

I take influence from different methods and books for beginners (Bastien, Faber, Agay, Alfred, and Hal Leonard), and a broad source of repertoire for amateurs, from classical to contemporary or pop music. I also compose small pieces that can help the student to work on some technical or musical aspects. When required, I also take time and initiative outside of lessons to provide students with the support they need to achieve their musical goals. For example, I have made brief tutorial videos for students, which have been very helpful for practicing during the week.

Apart from teaching, I have a strong professional career as a performer. My repertoire consists of solo piano and chamber music, and I am also a capable accompanist, singer, and composer. In addition to that, I am currently exploring interdisciplinary performances. Together with my Quinteto del Diablo, an ensemble featuring Argentinian new-tango music and my own compositions, we have been presenting a collaboration with dancer Rosanna Her Steege in a performance called “The Devil on the Dance Floor”.

As I am a flexible musician, I am a flexible teacher, so do not hesitate to contact me for lessons for you or your child/ren.

First of all, I am glad that you found my information here. Unfortunately I'm not pleased that I often find some very bad amateurs try to fake themselves as they are professional pianist or teacher. They display themself fancy as they want since this labor isn't required a certification when it's private lessons. Beginners can not really decide if they are good or not. It is risky for motivated students. I have got some students through this site after having lessons by those fake teachers and I had to do so much work to re-start from the beginning with them.

Personally I was struggling to play the piano as well due to my first piano teacher who couldn't teach me properly at all. Several years later, I had rare luck to found better teachers who have certain experiences as concert pianists. I started trying to get rid of my bad behaviors and rebuild new technique over 10 years on the piano. It takes so much time to get rid of.. It was tough work but now I can really tell you what it was and you can see some results on my videos here. I got very conscious of using my body proper way while practicing and I got more flexibilities on the piano. Let me share what I can do with you.

Biography
Shintaro is considered a unique pianist as performing modern and historical pianos parallel. He spent his childhood and student years in Japan. He already received first prizes at several known national piano competitions in Japan while he was studying at Kyoto City University of Arts. In the year of his master's graduation, he gave a solo recital in Kyoto, and his recital was considered as one of the best performances of over 200 concerts in the year by the AOYMA Music Foundation. He earned The AOYAMA Music Awards in 2010 and graduated master of piano performance in KCUA with summa cum laude. He continued his career as a soloist with several professional orchestras in Japan. Some of those concerts were broadcast on TV and radio. Shintaro continued studying the piano at Lucerne Conservatory with Konstantin Lifschitz supported by Hella Siegrist Fonds and AOYMA Music Foundation. He performed the Left-hand concerto by Ravel with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and James Gaffigan in KKL Lucerne Concert Hall in 2014.

"A brilliant pianist with solid technique and sensitivities" - Luzerner Zeitung 2014
“Elegantly and with creative power, Shintaro presented Mozart's Piano Concerto in E-flat Major KV 449, the layers of sound always audible, the dynamics balanced. It was surprising that the jury awarded him second prize. “ - Freiburger Nachrichten 2015

At the same time, his interests carried forward him to play chamber music, Lied duo, and historical practices on historical fortepianos. He received the first prize at the Orpheus-Swiss Chamber Music Competition participated by master students of all Swiss conservatories in 2014, and the second prize at The Rotary International in Lugano. Shintaro moved to the Netherlands in 2015, and he completed his master of fortepiano (historical pianos) at The Hague Royal Conservatory. He has worked as an accompanist and ensemble pianist for the Rotterdam Philharmonic orchestra, Opera2day, Residentie Orkest in Den Haag, Noord Nederlands Orkest. He also performed Brahms's “Deutsch Requiem” with Shuann Chai on historical piano and Luthers Bach Choir on the tour in 2020, "Mad King" by Maxwell Davies in New European Ensemble on the tour in 2021, a chamber music concert with François Fernandez and Yun Kyung Kim at the Beethoven Festival in 2022.
Shintaro is a member of the New European Ensemble for the new opera “Don Quichot” by Vanni Moretto (composer) and Stefano Pintor (Librettist) collaborated with Opera2day and La Fonte Musica in the tour 2023.

Students have different aspirations and needs, but in my lessons we can focus on rhythmic variation, tempo, comping, improvisation, ear training, chords, phrasing, articulation, expression - all while learning repertoire. That is how it all comes together, therefore I encourage my students to learn their favourite songs and also repertoire that will strengthen less strong areas of their playing. This means if you want to learn how to play pocket we focus on funk rhythms, if you want to learn how to play straight groove we focus on bossa or latin etc.

With a Bachelor in Jazz Guitar in the pocket - that’s what I mostly play, we can dig into chord melody, single line playing, repertoire and comping in a variety of styles within the jazz idiom.

The first lesson will be a checkup where you are as a student in your musical development, thereafter I will ask about your goals and aspirations and what you’re currently doing to reach them. My role is to oversee this process and share what has helped me in my musical development. I believe instrument lessons need to be practical and be based off concrete exercises that will help you reach the next level. For something to manifest into your playing you have to first get whatever you’re learning into your muscle memory - practice slowly with metronome, continuous repetition over a period of time, then the brain have a greater chance of obtaining the skill. Second step is to gradually increase the tempo and play with a good time feel, by doing this you will have what you’ve learnt in your hands. There are no shortcuts when learning a skill, you simply cannot buy it - you have to earn it!

Music is in our everyday life, whether we realise it or not. To go into music and start learning it is as natural as learning how to walk, cycle, or even breathe! Whichever the instrument, It is one of the most beautiful experiences we can give ourselves, bound to take us to new and undiscovered places.

My name is João, I'm from Portugal, I'm 27 years of age, and I have a bachelor in jazz from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. I've been playing piano all my life, and can't wait to share what I've learned with you!

I teach piano to all ages from beginner to intermediate. Although I have a program, I will let you create your own path, taking into account the several landmarks I create according to your level and needs. Teaching is all about the individuality of each person I work with, and as a student myself, I find it to be one of the most important points in teaching.

I focus mainly on jazz, but since music theory and harmony touch all kinds of music, I am open to the suggestions you bring into class. The lessons will focus on learning music through listening, as well as introducing the student to music theory, and reading scores. Whether you like Pop, Jazz, Bossa Nova, or Classical, all music comes from the same place, so let's dive in!

In my experience it is important to follow you as a student on the amount of time we spend in lesson, so the length of the lesson is determined by you in the moment, and what we are working on in the lesson. Because of this my rate per lesson in fixed, so depending on the moment and you we can have bigger or smaller lessons.
If you wish to do things differently I am open to discussing it!
