About Me
My name is Matthew and I am from Carbonear, Newfoundland. I am an avid hiker, reader, singer and supporter of my community. Giving back is extremely important to me and whatever I can do to help, I am going to do it. I have raised money for my local high school music program, ALS, MS, Cancer, Our local Food bank, my church and Parkinson’s. I have also supported the cancer relay whenever I was able. I have spent most of my life involved and invested in music. At the age of eleven, I started vocal lessons with Calvin Powell in Carbonear.
Each year, I was involved in the Kiwanis Music Festival until I was eighteen and received over 40 awards in my time at the festival in Carbonear, I also received the Junior Rose Bowl in 2014, and the senior Rose Bowl in 2016.
I attended MUN School of Music in 2016 under the tutelage of Dr. Jane
Leibel. During my time with Memorial University, I had the unique opportunity to be a part of the Atlantic Boy Choir, Newfoundland’s first provincial Boy choir. I gained so much personal, professional and cultural experience while being a part of this choir. We travelled to Italy, France, England, Ontario and across the province of Newfoundland for tours with the choir. We have also released two CDs named “Gloria,” and “Tutto Mozart”. “Gloria” is our Christmas CD and “Tutto Mozart,” is our CD based on all Mozart works. I was a featured soloist on our Mozart CD. I also worked for them as a helper, per say. I would help the boys with their music, be a role model for them to look up too and to be their friends and guide them in the right direction as young singers.
I gained so many powerful relationships from my time at MUN as well as with the boy choir and I am so thankful for the guidance I received from my professors at MUN and from Jakub Martinec, The choral professor at Memorial and Atlantic Boy choir director. I learned many things including Western Classical Theory, Post-Tonal Theory, Music History, Opera performance, Music Technologies, Improvisation, Vocal and Studio Pedagogy, Choral Conducting and Much More.
I decided to look into different fields of music rather than choral and solo opera singing, so that I could broaden my love of different musical opportunities as a career and instantly fell in love with teaching. I knew at that moment, teaching would be exactly the kind of fulfilling career i would like to pursue. I feel that I would excel in this career path because of my interest in teaching, helping mold the future generation of music makers and my love for passing on music to those who wish to learn it.
