To simplify, English is the result of a Germanic invasion of Celtic lands, Latinized by Vikings speaking Old French from Normandy. The syntax is originally Germanic, but the auxiliary verb do is Celtic, and more than half of its vocabulary is Latin or French! In short, English is much more complex and subtle than it seems, and it's not for nothing that most French speakers pronounce it badly!
