Singing
First, I always strive to understand the student's motivations and adapt my teaching to help them achieve their goals. Furthermore, in my course I emphasize three aspects that I consider important. The first aspect is the student's technique and physical relationship with their instrument (we discuss posture, how to hold the sticks, rudiments, and coordination...). The objective: to obtain a calm and controlled sound, with relaxed movement. The second aspect is language and repertoire. This involves introducing students to the basic repertoire, linked to the origins of the music that gave rise to contemporary music and the drums (jazz, funk, soul, etc.). This doesn't mean playing jazz or funk perfectly; rather, it's about expanding students' musical knowledge, presenting the evolution of the drums, and introducing them to new groups and styles. With this approach, I try to guide students in the style they want to explore, helping them discover the origins of that particular music. Ultimately, I equip students with the tools and skills to begin transcribing music independently. On the one hand, I teach key concepts for recognizing structures, the beginnings and ends of musical phrases, time signatures, basic rhythms, and so on. This doesn't necessarily involve music theory. Rather, I emphasize the development of active listening, musical memory, and singing, as essential tools for learning new pieces. To enrich this learning, I use software such as Trancribe!, iRrealPo, Moises, loop libraries, Live, Finale, and others. In my opinion, these resources facilitate and empower students in their musical development. Basically, I try to help students become autonomous in their learning, and to make them appreciate and understand musical learning as a fun and motivating journey, with no limits other than their creativity...
